Aepycamelus was named by Macdonald (1956). It is not extant. Its type is Alticamelus giraffinus.
It was assigned to Aepycamelinae by Webb (1965); to Camelidae by Macdonald (1956) and Carroll (1988); and to Lamini by Honey et al. (1998), May (2019) and Lynch et al. (2020).
