Comatula was named by Lamarck (1806). It is extant. Its type is Comatula solaris. It is the type genus of Comatuladae, Comatulinae, Comatulini.

It was assigned to Comatulinae by Hess and Messing (2011); and to Comatulini by Summers et al. (2014).
