Stelocyon was named by Gingerich (1978). It is not extant. Its type is Stelocyon arctylos.

It was assigned to Mesonychia by Gingerich (1978); to Cete by Archibald (1998); and to Triisodontidae by McKenna and Bell (1997), Tabuce et al. (2011).
