Rhynchippus was named by Ameghino (1897). Its type is Rhynchippus equinus. It is the type genus of Rhynchippinae.
It was assigned to Rhynchippidae by Simpson (1932); and to Notohippidae by Ameghino (1897), Carroll (1988), Shockey (1997).
