Archaeohyrax was named by Ameghino (1897). Its type is Archaeohyrax patagonicus. It is the type genus of Archaeohyracidae.

It was assigned to Archaeohyracidae by Ameghino (1897), Carroll (1988), Reguero and Prevosti (2010).
