Swartpuntia was named by Narbonne et al. (1997) [Sepkoski's age data: V u]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Swartpuntia germsi.
It was assigned to Erniettamorpha by Sepkoski (2002); to Petalonamae by Hoyal Cuthill and Han (2018); and to Erniettomorpha by Erwin et al. (2011) and Darroch et al. (2018).
