Lyopora was named by Nicholson and Etheridge (1878). Its type is Palaeopora favosa.

It was corrected as Liopora by Hill (1953); it was misspelled as Liopora by Hill (1953), Klaamann (1966), Murray (1985) and Sepkoski (2002).

It was assigned to Tabulata by Hill (1953); to Lyoporinae by Klaamann (1966) and Murray (1985); and to Tabulata by Hill (1953) and Sepkoski (2002).
