It was recombined as Eutamias senex by Merriam (1897), Howell (1929), Hall (1981); it was synonymized subjectively with Tamias townsendii by Levenson and Hoffmann (1984); it was recombined as Neotamias senex by Piaggio and Spicer (2001).
