Microcyclus was named by Meek and Worthen (1868) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi D Give Sepkoski's reference number: 422]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Paleocyclidae by Bassler (1937); to Hadrophyllidae by Hill (1956); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).
