Tetragnathinae was named by Menge (1866). It is extant. Its type is Tetragnatha.

It was reranked as the subfamily Tetragnathidae by Menge (1866), Dunlop et al. (2013) and Wheeler et al. (2017).

It was assigned to Araneomorphae by Menge (1866); to Argiopidae by Petrunkevitch (1922); and to Araneoidea by Dunlop et al. (2013) and Wheeler et al. (2017).
