Nimravinae was named by Trouessart (1885). It is not extant.
It was synonymized subjectively with Machairodontinae by Hay (1902).
It was assigned to Felidae by Savage (1965), Heizmann et al. (1980); and to Nimravidae by Flynn and Galiano (1982), Bryant (1991), Hunt (1998), Peigné (2003), Slater and Van Valkenburgh (2008).
