Stylina was named by Lamarck (1816) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 821,834,1270]. Its type is Stylina echinulata.

It was assigned to Stylinidae by Roniewicz (1976) and Lauxmann (1991); to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Stylininae by Morycowa and Decrouez (2006).
