Protowenella plena was named by Missarzhevsky and Mambetov (1981) [Missarzhevsky in Missarzhevsky & Mambetov 1981
DISTRIBUTION: Middle Cambrian; Asia.]. It is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Beshtash, Talas Alatau, bed 5, which is in an Atdabanian marine dolomite in the Beshtash Formation of Kyrgyzstan.
