Oriostoma was named by Munier-Chalmas (1876) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-l D Give Sepkoski's reference number: 362,797,1066]. Its type is Oriostoma barrandei. It is the type genus of Oriostomatidae, Oriostomatoidea.

It was reranked as Straparollus (Oriostoma) by Foerste (1893).

It was assigned to Straparollus by Foerste (1893); to Cyrtonellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Oriostomatidae by Knight et al. (1960), Linsley and Kier (1984), Wagner (1999) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
