Onychochilus cochleatum was named by Lindström (1884) [Onychochilus? cochleatum Lindström 1884]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Mimospira cochleata by Wängberg-Eriksson (1979), Frýda (1989) and Wagner (2023).
