Conocephalites wisconsinensis was named by Hall (1863).

It was recombined as Crepicephalus wisconsensis by Owen (1852); it was recombined as Saratogia wisconsinensis by Walcott (1916); it was recombined as Idahoia wisconsinensis by Resser (1935) and Resser (1935); it was recombined as Idahoia wisconsensis by Bell et al. (1952); it was recombined as Saratogia wisconsensis by Westrop (1986).
