Taxonomy
Conocardium artifex was named by Barrande (1881). Its type specimen is L23441, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Cartericardia.
It was recombined as Hippocardia artifex by Babin et al. (1999) and Rogalla and Amler (2003); it was recombined as Cartericardia artifex by Rogalla and Amler (2006) and Wagner (2023).
