Polychrotinae was named by Macey et al. (1997). It is extant.

It was reranked as the family Polychrotidae by Conrad and Norell (2007) and Conrad et al. (2007).

It was assigned to Iguanidae by Smith (2006); to Iguania by Conrad et al. (2007); and to Pleurodonta by Conrad and Norell (2007).
