Leptoconus was named by Swainson (1840) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 814]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Conus (Leptoconus) by Woodring (1928), Mukerjee (1939), Olsson and Harbison (1953), DuBar (1958), Dey (1961), Petuch (1988), Harzhauser et al. (2002) and Landau et al. (2008).

It was assigned to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Conus by Woodring (1928), Mukerjee (1939), Olsson and Harbison (1953), DuBar (1958), Dey (1961), Petuch (1988), Harzhauser et al. (2002) and Landau et al. (2008).
