Horlick Formation lithofacies 1 (Devonian of Antarctica)

Where: Antarctica (84.8° S, 115.0° W: paleocoordinates 34.6° S, 175.6° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Horlick Formation, Early/Lower Devonian (419.2 - 393.3 Ma)

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; intraclastic sandstone and micaceous, gray siltstone

• The marine lithofacies 1-8 are interpreted as "shallow inner shelf to shoreline, where storms produced a changing pattern of coarse sand bars and finer troughs." Lithofacies 1 interpreted as "intertidal to upper shoreface, on an unbarred coastline"
• "Cross-bedded, usually coarse, feldspathic or quartzose, poorly sorted sandstones, with rare shale clasts and local hummocky cross strat.; thin, discontin. layers of ripple laminated grey micaceous siltst. variably present; poorly fossiliferous"

Collection methods: Taxa are listed as Present, Abundant, Rare.
