Atacamatitan was named by Kellner et al. (2011). Its type is Atacamatitan chilensis. It was considered monophyletic by Kellner et al. (2011).
It was assigned to Titanosauridae by Kellner et al. (2011); and to Lithostrotia by Rubilar-Rogers et al. (2012).
