Arucas 35 masl (Pleistocene of Spain)

Where: Spain (28.1° N, 15.5° W: paleocoordinates 28.1° N, 15.5° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Middle Pleistocene (0.8 - 0.1 Ma)

• The lavas have been dated by the conventional K/Ar dating method on whole rock at 0.5 Ma (0.548 and 0.529 U 0.02) and 0.3 Ma (0.297 and 0.326 U 0.03), respectively (Lietz and Schmincke, 1975). Because conventional K/Ar dating on whole rock may give erroneous older apparent ages (Guillou et al., 1998), new unspiked K/Ar datings of groundmass were carried out on the same lavas. These new determinations give ages of 0.421 +- 0.020 Ma for the tephrite and 0.151 +- 0.011 Ma for the Hauyne phonolite.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; lithified conglomerate and lithified sandstone

• coastal conglomerates and sandstones interbedded with the tephritic lava flows

Size class: macrofossils
