Punta Pelada Formation (Oligocene of Costa Rica)

Where: Costa Rica (10.0° N, 84.6° W: paleocoordinates 8.5° N, 82.2° W)

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Punta Pelada Formation, Late/Upper Oligocene (28.4 - 23.0 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the Punta Pelada Fm, which unconformably overlies and is laterally equivalent to the Senosri Fm (Late Eocene-Early Miocene) and is unconformably overlain by the Uscari Fm (Early-Late Miocene). THICKNESS: From beds with section of no more than 25 m. AGE: Late Oligocene to Early Miocene. Placed in the Late Oligocene by enterer. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From beds throughout section.

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: deep subtidal shelf; lithified sandstone and lithified limestone

• ENVIRONMENT: Shallow marine environment (50-80 m depth), influenced by currents and localized clastic input.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Sandstones, conglomerates and limestone. LITHIFICATION: Lithified, based on figured specimens.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: cast, mold/impression
