Actinopteri - Istiophoriformes - Sphyraenidae
Woodward (1901, p.369) suggested that Sphyraena amici Agassiz, 1843 was not correctly placed in the genus Sphyraena Artedi, 1793 without indicating a better placement. Capasso (2017) treated it as a valid species in the genus Sphyraena Artedi, 1793 in an overview of the fossil quarries of Haqel in Mount Lebanon. Davis (1887) suggested that Sphyraena amici Agassiz, 1843 was instead a species of Eurypholis Pictet, 1850; however, this action was never followed in the literature of either sphyraenid or aulopiform fishes and requires further study. Until a proper assessment is carried out, it is herein considered provisionally as part of the genus as Sphyraena amici Agassiz, 1843.
