Sphyraena intermedia Bassani 1889 (barracuda)

Actinopteri - Istiophoriformes - Sphyraenidae

Sphyraena intermedia Bassani, 1889 was described from Italy and considered valid by several authors (e.g., Woodward, 1901; Casier, 1946; de Sylva, 1963). Another species of Sphyraena Artedi, 1793 was described as Sphyraena intermedia Pastore, 2009 also from Italy but based on extant specimens. The latter species by Pastore is herein found to be primary homonym of Sphyraena intermedia (Bassani, 1889), a fossil species known from the Oligocene of Italy and consequently the name by Pastore is deemed permanently invalid under Article 57.2 of the ICZN (1999). Santini et al. (2015) mentioned the latter but overlooked the former in their account of species of Sphyraena Artedi, 1793.

Belongs to Sphyraena according to Bassani 1889
