Sister taxa: Yunnanosaurus robustus, Yunnanosaurus youngi

Type specimen: IVPP AS V.20 (NGMJ 004546), a skeleton. Its type locality is Huangchiatien, Lufeng, which is in a Sinemurian terrestrial horizon in the Lufeng Formation of China.
