Leptoptilos was named by Lesson (1831). It is extant. It is the type genus of Leptoptilini. It was considered monophyletic by Kahl (1972).
It was assigned to Aves by Lesson (1831); to Leptoptilini by Kahl (1972), Meijer and Awe Due (2010); and to Ciconiidae by Lambrecht (1933), Brodkorb (1964), Mlikovsky (2002), Louchart et al. (2008), Meijer et al. (2013), Clements et al. (2017), Tambussi et al. (2023).
