Hexaprotodon karumensis was named by Coryndon (1977). Its type specimen is KNM-ER 798, a partial skull, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Hippopotamus karumensis by Coryndon (1977), Weston and Boisserie (2010).
