Taxonomy

Aeschnidiidae was named by Handlirsch (1906). Its type is Aeschnidium.

It was reranked as the subfamily Aeschnidiinae by Tillyard (1918).

It was assigned to Aeshnidae by Tillyard (1918); to Anisoptera by Carpenter (1992); to Aeschnidioidea by Carle and Wighton (1990) and Zhang (1999); to Pananisoptera by Bechly (1998) and Bechly (2000); and to Neoanisoptera by Bechly (2007).

Sonidae was named by Pritykina (1986). It is not extant. Its type is Sona.

It was synonymized subjectively with Aeschnidiidae by Sturm and Mendes (1998).

It was assigned to Aeshnoidea by Pritykina (1986).
Archaeogomphus was named by Lin (1976).

It was replaced with Yixiangomphus by Lin (1986), Nel and Paicheler (1994) and Fleck et al. (2002).

It was assigned to Gomphinae by Hong (1982); and to Gomphidae by Lin (1976) and Lin (1982).
Pseudosamarura was named by Lin (1976).

It was synonymized subjectively with Aeschnidium by Zhang (1999); it was considered a nomen dubium by Nel and Paicheler (1994) and Fleck et al. (2002).

It was assigned to Gomphidae by Lin (1976).
Pseudosamarura largina was named by Lin (1976). It is an impression. Its type locality is AAI511, Dakangpu village, which is in a Barremian lacustrine - large shale in the Yixian Formation of China.

It was synonymized subjectively with Aeschnidium heishankowensis by Zhang (1999); it was considered a nomen dubium by Nel and Paicheler (1994) and Fleck et al. (2002).
Hebeiaeschnidia was named by Hong (1982).

It was considered a nomen dubium by Nel and Martínez-Delclòs (1993).

It was assigned to Aeschnidiidae by Hong (1982).
Yixiangomphus was named by Lin (1986).

It was corrected as Neimenggolgomphus by Nel and Paicheler (1994); it was synonymized subjectively with Aeschnidium by Zhang (1999); it was considered a nomen dubium by Fleck et al. (2002).

It was assigned to Gomphinae by Hong (1982); and to Gomphidae by Nel and Paicheler (1994).
Neimengogomphus dongwugaiensis was named by Hong (1982). It is an impression. Its type locality is Dongwugai, northwest of Shilanji, Urad Zhongqi, which is in an Aptian terrestrial horizon in the Huliugou Formation of China.

It was recombined as Neimenggolgomphus dongwugaiensis by Nel and Paicheler (1994); it was synonymized subjectively with Aeschnidium heishankowensis by Zhang (1999); it was considered a nomen dubium by Fleck et al. (2002).
