Taxonomy

Protomyia bucklandi was named by Heer (1849). It is a compression fossil.

It was recombined as Penthetria bucklandi by Evenhuis (1994); it was recombined as Plecia bucklandi by Förster (1891), Theobald (1937), Skartveit and Nel (2017) and Skartveit and Krizmanić (2020).

Synonyms

Plecia dilatativentris was named by Theobald (1937). Its type specimen is Coll Inst. Geol. Lyon A 72, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Aix-en-Provence (Inst. Geol. Lyon), which is in a Chattian lacustrine - large limestone in the Niveau du gypse d'Aix Formation of France.

It was synonymized subjectively with Plecia bucklandi by Skartveit and Nel (2017) and Skartveit and Krizmanić (2020).
Protomyia gracilis was named by Heer (1856). It is a compression fossil.

It was recombined as Plecia gracilis by Theobald (1937); it was recombined as Penthetria gracilis by Evenhuis (1994); it was synonymized subjectively with Plecia bucklandi by Skartveit and Nel (2017) and Skartveit and Krizmanić (2020).
Protomyia elegans was named by Heer (1856). It is a compression fossil.

It was recombined as Plecia elegans by Theobald (1937); it was recombined as Penthetria elegans by Evenhuis (1994); it was synonymized subjectively with Plecia bucklandi by Skartveit and Nel (2017) and Skartveit and Krizmanić (2020).
Bibio edwardsii was named by Oustalet (1870). Its type specimen is MNHN-LP-R.06669, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Corent (MNHN collection), which is in a Rupelian lacustrine - large marl in France.

It was recombined as Plecia edwardsii by Brongniart (1878) and Gee et al. (2001); it was recombined as Penthetria edwardsi by Evenhuis (1994); it was synonymized subjectively with Plecia bucklandi by Skartveit and Nel (2017) and Skartveit and Krizmanić (2020).
