Taxonomy
Protomyia rhenana was named by von Heyden and von Heyden (1865). Its type specimen is NHMUK In 38798, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Rott (Krantz Bonn coll), which is in a MP 30 lacustrine - large shale in the Rott Formation of Germany.
It was recombined as Plecia rhenana by von Heyden and von Heyden (1865), Förster (1891), Statz (1943), Evenhuis (1994), Skartveit and Nel (2017) and Skartveit and Wedmann (2021).
