Pleuracanthus was named by Agassiz (1837). It is the type genus of Pleuracanthidae.
It was assigned to Pleuracanthidae by Woodward (1889), Hay (1902) and Heintz (1934); and to Xenacanthidae by Jordan (1963) and Zangerl (1981).
