Hexascytina was named by Wootton (1963). Its type is Hexascytina transecta.

It was synonymized subjectively with Heteroscytina by Popov and Shcherbakov (1991).

It was assigned to Actinoscytinidae by Wootton (1963); and to Progonocimicidae by Dong et al. (2014).
