Canningella was named by Legg (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l Sepkoski's reference number: 565]. Its type is Canningella hardmani.

It was assigned to Cybelopsinae by Fortey (1979); to Pliomeridae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Trilobita by Sepkoski (2002).
