Herbstiala was named by Schmidt (1952). Its type is Herbstiala herbsti. It is the type genus of Herbstialidae.

It was assigned to Herbstialidae by Schmidt (1952), Carpenter (1992); and to Paoliidae by Prokop et al. (2014).
