Taxonomy
Bibio murchisonis was named by Unger (1841). Its type specimen is SLJG 77466, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Radoboj (Grätz Collection), which is in a Sarmatian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal limestone in Croatia.
It was recombined as Bibiopsis murchisonii by Heer (1849); it was corrected as Bibio murchisoni by Pongrácz (1928); it was recombined as Penthetria murchisonii by Skartveit and Krizmanić (2020).
