Omalidae was named by Handlirsch (1906). Its type is Omalia.
It was synonymized subjectively with Cacurgidae by Pruvost (1930); it was corrected as Omaliidae by Brauckmann and Hahn (1980) and Carpenter (1992); it was synonymized subjectively with Geraridae by Kukalová-Peck and Brauckmann (1992); it was corrected as Omaliaidae by Ross et al. (2013).
It was assigned to Protorthoptera by Handlirsch (1906), Brauckmann and Hahn (1980) and Carpenter (1992); and to Archaeorthoptera by Ross et al. (2013).
