Codaster was named by M'Coy (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u Sepkoski's reference number: 82]. It is not extant. Its type is Codaster acutus.

It was assigned to Codasteridae by McCoy (1849), Bodenbender and Fisher (2001); and to Fissiculata by Sepkoski (2002).
