Colodon was named by Marsh (1890).

It was assigned to Lophiodontidae by Hay (1902), Scott (1913); to Perissodactyla by Matthew and Granger (1925); to Helaletinae by Radinsky (1966); to Tapiroidea by Marsh (1890), Prothero and Schoch (1989), Colbert and Schoch (1998); to Helaletidae by Radinsky (1963), Bjork (1967), Holbrook (1999); and to Tapiridae by Colbert (2005).

L. B. Radinsky 1963	Medium-sized to large helaletids with relatively short, wide cheek 1 a_ teeth. Canines small or absent. P with lingual loph or cusp; P * essentially molariform, protocone and hypocone more or less well separated, metaloph as prominent as prota- 12 loph and extending to hypocone. M " metacone flat to concave, more lingually displaced and shortened than in Helaletes. Pt absent. P2_4 with wide talonids and relatively large entoconids. Greatly enlarged nasal incisions with reduced nasals.
