Pterophorii was named by Latreille (1802). It is extant. Its type is Pterophorus.

It was corrected as Pterophoridae by van Nieukerken et al. (2011), Sohn et al. (2012).

It was assigned to Nocturni by Latreille (1802); and to Pterophoroidea by van Nieukerken et al. (2011), Sohn et al. (2012).
