Taxonomy
Testudo despotti was named by Szalai (1937). Its type specimen is Malta Museum, number unknown, a set of limb elements, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Micabiba, which is in a Pleistocene terrestrial horizon in Malta.
