Sterna alba was named by Sparman (1786). It is extant.

It was recombined as Gygis alba by Olson (1975), Steadman (1991), Steadman and Pahlavan (1992), Steadman (1992), Steadman (1994), Clements et al. (2017), Rigal et al. (2018).
