Olenellus torelli was named by Moberg (1892).

It was recombined as Schmidtia torelli by Moberg (1899); it was recombined as Mesonacis torelli by Walcott (1910); it was recombined as Schmidtiellus mickwitzi torelli by Lieberman (1999).
