Petaurus was named by Shaw (1791). It is extant. It is the type genus of Petauridae.

It was reranked as Sciurus (Petaurus) by Kerr (1792).

It was assigned to Sciurus by Kerr (1792); to Phalangistina by Gray (1825); to Petauridae by Springer et al. (1994); and to Petaurinae by McKenna and Bell (1997).
