Parapithecus was named by Schlosser (1911). It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Beard et al. (2016).
It was synonymized subjectively with Apidium by Gingerich (1978).
It was assigned to Parapithecidae by Simons and Kay (1983), McKenna and Bell (1997), Simons (2001), Seiffert et al. (2005); to Parapithecinae by Beard et al. (2016); and to Parapithecinae by Mattingly et al. (2021).
