Taxonomy
Oreopithecus was named by Gervais (1872). Its type is Oreopithecus bambolii.
It was assigned to Oreopithecidae by Simons (1960) and McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Hominidae by Andrews (1992), Harrison and Gu (1999) and Abbazzi et al. (2008).
