Nimravides was named by Kitts (1958).
It was synonymized subjectively with Pseudaelurus by Dalquest (1969).
It was assigned to Nimravinae by Kitts (1958); to Machairodontini by Berta and Galiano (1983); to Felidae by Martin and Schultz (1975), Baskin (1981), Carroll (1988); to Felinae by Martin (1998); and to Homotheriini by Slater and Van Valkenburgh (2008), Antón et al. (2013).
