Hessolestes was named by Peterson (1931). It is not extant. Its type is Hessolestes ultimus.
It was assigned to Mesonychinae by Szalay and Gould (1966); and to Mesonychidae by Peterson (1931), Gustafson (1986), McKenna and Bell (1997), Gingerich (1998).
