It was assigned to Gomphotheriinae by Simpson (1945); to Gomphotheriidae by Carroll (1988); to Elephantiformes by Shoshani and Tassy (1996); to Phiomiidae by McKenna and Bell (1997), Shoshani and Tassy (2005); to Palaeomastodontidae by Andrews (1906), Sanders et al. (2010); and to Proboscidea by Wang et al. (2017).
