Taxonomy
Theriodictis platensis was named by Mercerat (1891). Its type specimen is MLP 10-80, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Mar del Plata (Ensenadan), which is in an Ensenadan terrestrial horizon in the Miramar Formation of Argentina.
It was recombined as Macrocyon platensis by Kraglievich (1917); it was recombined as Palaeocyon platensis by Ameghino (1917).
